My Back Don’t Hurt No More

Sick person

That hideously constructed sentence comes courtesy of a mattress commercial that ran on television when I was a kid. But it describes me…mostly.

For the past few months I’ve been dealing with severe back pain in my right rhomboid muscle. The pain had gotten so bad it was affecting my mobility, especially when driving. It affected my sleep; every time I rolled over the pain woke me up. I was becoming a sleep-deprived zombie. Neither massage, stretching exercises, nor the painful Grid roller loosened the knot. So how did I finally get relief?

Believe it or not, my remedy came in the form of a coaching session. I’ve been living with a stressful issue since November. The exact nature of the issue doesn’t matter. What matters is I wasn’t dealing with it effectively. I brought the situation to a coaching call and the coach walked me through a thought exercise to help me reframe the issue. Within 30 minutes the rhomboid loosened up. That evening I slept through the night without waking up in pain. My back is still sore, probably because I’d been tensing the muscle since November (ugh) but my mobility is so much better. I’m sure my fellow drivers are relieved.

I’ve been honored to witness how coaching has made a difference in my client’s lives. And I’m thrilled its made such a dramatic difference in mine.
