I’m Walking and Running for Peace

I’m a fan of John “The Penguin” Bingham. He’s the guy who made it ok to be a slow runner. I’ve read most of his books and I consider myself to be a proud member of the Penguin Brigade. I enjoyed a long chat with him at the expo before my first half marathon. He really helped calm my nerves. So when his wife, Coach Jenny Hadfield announced an event to raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, I wanted to check it out.

Coach Jenny has put together the 2013 Run For Peace Virtual Marathon. All registration fees go to the victims of Boston. Participants have between April 29 and May 31 to walk or run 26.2 miles.

I registered immediately. I’ll walk most of my miles; my surgeon has told me to lay off running until Memorial Day.

Runners are giving people. We we create on-line donation pages to raise money for our favorite charities. We register to run charity events.  I think because the bombings took place during a marathon…a marathon that’s on so many bucket lists…runners feel a deep desire to reach out to our fellow runners and those wonderful spectators whose lives are forever changed. Coach Jenny has created another way for us to combine our love of running and our desire to be philanthropic.

Here’s a link to take you to the registration page. I hope you’ll consider joining me.

Let’s Run and Walk for Peace.
